File formats

Wherever possible, documents and downloadable files available on this site are provided in multiple formats.

File Extension File Format Additional Information
PDF Portable Document Format Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free of charge from Adobe's website (external link). All PDFs on this site have been designed for Acrobat 7 or later.
DOC Microsoft Word DOC files are document files that can be opened with a wide variety of word processing programs. The most commonly used software to open DOC files is Microsoft Word, however, many free alternatives are also available.
XLS Microsoft Excel XLS files are spreadsheet or data files that can be opened with a wide variety of programs. The most commonly used software to open XLS files is Microsoft Excel. However, many free alternatives are also available.
XML "Extensible Markup Language" XML files are a common alternative to document and spreadsheet file formats. On the VEC website XML files are used as an alternative to Microsoft Excel files. They can be opened with a wide variety of programs.
GIF Graphic GIF files are images that can be opened with a wide variety of programs. This includes web browsers.
MP3 Compressed Audio MP3 files are audio files that can be played with most media playing software. The most commonly used free software for playing MP3 files are Windows Media Player (external link) or iTunes (external link).
KML Keyhole Markup Language KML is a file format used to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Maps for mobile. You will need to download Google Earth (external link) or an alternative to view these maps.
